By Dave Rodney— Freddie McGregor performing at Negril Reggaefest, held at Wavz Beach on Saturday night. “Scandalous but not surprising” is how veteran Jamaican reggae singer Freddie McGregor has described the outcome of the 2017 Reggae Grammy Awards, where Ziggy Marley, Bob Marley’s eldest son, was announced winner of the Best Reggae Album. Ziggy’s self-titled winning album, Ziggy Marley, is little known within the reggae community in Jamaica, but it beat out five other nominees to take the coveted and elusive award, an award that has slipped away from the grasp of many global icons in reggae music. Eleven popular reggae heartthrobs – Beres Hammond, Chronixx, Dennis Brown, Third World, Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman, Barrington Levy, Marcia Griffiths, Etana, Vybz Kartel, and McGregor himself are yet to win a Grammy. “IT’S TIME FOR ZIGGY MARLEY NOT TO ACCEPT THE REGGAE GRAMMY NOMINATION” SAYS ROGER STEFFENS!

BY RICHARD JOHNSON—  Ziggy Marley— Sunday’s win by Ziggy Marley for Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards has ignited another wave of criticism. Over the years, the Grammy judges have been criticised whenever a Marley wins the Best Reggae Album category. Critics claim that if a Marley is in the category a win is assured, as voters are drawn to their late father, Bob Marley. Reggae historian and archivist Roger Steffens, who predicted that Marley would win his eighth Grammy, has weighed in on the discussion. He believes it is time for Ziggy Marley to decline a nomination for Best Reggae Album, therefore giving other acts a chance at winning. “If he (Ziggy Marley) is truly gracious, when he accepts it, he will announce that he will no longer accept a nomination for the … Read entire article »

FREDDIE McGREGOR LASHES OUT AT THE REGGAE GRAMMY AWARD!

By Dave Rodney— Freddie McGregor— In perhaps the most blistering attack on the reggae Grammy to date, Jamaican reggae icon and veteran singer Freddie McGregor has lashed out at the 59-year-old American institution, calling the reggae arm of the organisation that typically awards excellence in the music industry, “an embarrassment of indescribable magnitude to reggae music”. This week, McGregor became the latest voice in a growing chorus of grumblings over the annual picks for best reggae album. The albums selected for reggae nominations have been harshly criticised in the past for being obscure and lackluster and for being out of touch with the core of the Jamaican reggae music reality. The albums selected for the 2017 award taking place on February 12, 2017 are from Devin Di Dakta, J Boog, Ziggy Marley, Raging Fyah, … Read entire article »
